Abstract

This pre-proposal describes a two-year effort to develop a system which provides
the Port Authority (and later, possibly, riders) visual access to real-time information on the location and other important characteristics of the individual buses in the fleet.
The project has two components: a) a software and visual display development activity and 2) a communication infrastructure activity.  Year One will focus on generating the interactive data displays (maps) utilizing previously collected data and on developing a communications infrastructure that will allow a real-time implementation in Year Two.  Year Two will focus on refining and testing the communication infrastructure to support real-time display for all buses over the entire county, developing methods to deliver subsets of the output display for different local areas, and addressing the unique problems associated with processing real-time data.
