A series of working papers starting with "MOBILITY21: Strategic Investments for Transportation Infrastructure & Technology" has engaged folks in the Computer Research Association (CRA) and Whitehouse administration. This effort has engaged law professionals to investigate AV safety and risk within a new framework. It was the topic of presentation at the Inaugural Junior Faculty Forum, Penn Law [https://www.law.upenn.edu/newsevents/calendar.php#!event_id/55094/view/event]. Impacts This effort resulted in a $3 million Intel Science and Technology Center at Penn, with a focus on Connected Autonomous Vehicles. The effort is a key bridge between Intel Labs and MobilEye in the blame assignment problem for AV accidents. We are developing a formal framework for safety which complements MobilEye's Responsibility-Sensitive Safety (RSS) model. The effort has led to collaborations with LG and GM on the development of a Verification Processor Unit that would enforce safety properties at runtime for an AV. Students engaged in this are working at GM R&D this summer to develop the first prototype. Other The material has been integrated in a course titled, Digital Twins: Model-based Embedded Systems and is currently taught at UPenn and University of Virginia. Outcomes New Partners Intel Labs MobilEye GM R&D Toyota ITC Windels Marx Lane & Mittendorf, LLP Issues The project was completed successfully.
