We have started several of those: Detection and analysis of when passengers enter and exit the bus, locating trash cans and determining if they are full, detecting snow and other obstacles that make it difficult for passengers to get to the bus stop, detection and analysis of construction zones, and detecting unusual events. The detection and analysis of when passengers enter and exit the bus is furthest along in the development. We have found several instances in our data set where the bus stops are not marked in the official bus map. We plan to meet with the transit agency to get feedback on these results. Two Summer students wrote papers about their work for the RISS (Robotics Institute Summer Scholar) journal, the papers will appear late 2021. Impacts If successful, our BusEdge system will help transit agencies to better manage their operations and assets. Other We developed a technique to detect people entering or leaving a transit bus. We have collected a large set of videos from 5 cameras around a bus during regular transit operations. We have developed material for a class section "AI in Transportation Asset Management" Outcomes New Partners We are in talks with the Hawaii transit agency TheBus (http://www.thebus.org/) to partner with us on the BusEdge project.
