Project: #340 Transit dependents, choice riders, and service criticality: an analysis of the determinants of bus ridership in the Philadelphia Region Progress Report - Reporting Period Ending: Sept. 30, 2021 Principal Investigator: Erick Guerra Status: Active Start Date: July 1, 2020 End Date: June 30, 2023 Research Type: Applied Grant Type: Research Grant Program: FAST Act - Mobility National (2016 - 2022) Grant Cycle: Mobility21 - University of Pennsylvania Progress Report (Last Updated: Oct. 5, 2021, 9 a.m.) % Project Completed to Date: 60 % Grant Award Expended: 60 % Match Expended & Document: 0 USDOT Requirements Accomplishments We have completed the choice ridership manuscript which is under revision in the Journal of Transportation and Land Use. Findings have been presented at internal online presentations at Carnegie Mellon, University of Texas Austin, and the University of Pennsylvania. The paper has also been accepted for presentation at TRB and the Annual Meeting of the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning. We have completed data collection/processing and initial modeling for the study looking at the effects of Covid-19 on transit ridership. There have been a number of challenges due to low and inconsistent sampling rates on the Automated Passenger Counting systems. Over the next period, we will finalize our unit of analysis (transit station or aggregation geography) and finalize the predictive models. Impacts I have worked with SEPTA and City of Philadelphia staff to discuss how findings might help support and inform the city's transit plan and SEPTA's forthcoming bus network redesign. Once the choice ridership paper has been published, I will work to disseminate findings to local agencies and through media outlets.
