This system records what happens outside the bus with several cameras. We want to tap into this video stream to monitor the infrastructure, count the traffic, update maps and run other applications useful for transportation. In the past year we have acquired a full safety system. With the help of the manufacturer we installed our own Ubuntu operating system on the hardware. With this we were able to also install all our edge computing software. The main parts of the software are the Gabriel framework that manages all the data flow, the early discard filter that reduces the data stream to a manageable level, the analysis software on the server side and finally the map display. Analysis software and map display reside on a computer on campus. All the software and hardware is now ready to be installed on the FreedomTransit bus. This project was finished at the end of 2020. A follow-up project "Bus on the edge: Continuous monitoring of traffic and infrastructure - year 2" will continue the work by installing testing our system in early 2021. Impacts This project has already helped in getting follow-on projects. One is a NSF project that wants to detect unusual traffic events. The second is a project with Argo AI, it wants to use our system as input to high-definition (HD) map updates. Other One sensor class and one transportation class was taught partially based on the material of this project. Outcomes New Partners n/a Issues n/a
