Project: #22 Building an accessible, low-stress, safe, and sustainable, bicycle infrastructure network for the City of Pittsburgh Progress Report - Reporting Period Ending: March 31, 2018 Principal Investigator: Sean Qian Status: Completed Start Date: Jan. 1, 2017 End Date: Aug. 31, 2018 Research Type: None Grant Type: Research Grant Program: MAP-21 TSET National (2013 - 2018) Grant Cycle: 2017 TSET UTC Progress Report (Last Updated: March 25, 2018, 11:41 a.m.) % Project Completed to Date: 80 % Grant Award Expended: 80 % Match Expended & Document: 80 USDOT Requirements Accomplishments 1. Developed a system of metrics to measure safety of bikes for each road segment in the City of Pittsburgh, namely bikeability score. Those metrics include crash frequency, injuries, traffic volume, traffic speed, riding easiness, bus coverage, crime, etc. 2. A GIS- based web application was developed to provide user interfaces to visualize and customize bikeability score for users and agencies. Impacts This web application has been presented to both public agencies and private sector, such as Department of Mobility and Infrastructure at the City of Pittsburgh, PennDOT, Port Authority of Allegheny County, Southwest Pennsylvania Commissions, and Healthy Ride Pittsburgh. This tool holds great potential to be commercialized with substantial market, impact travelers’ daily choices to promote cycling, and ultimately achieve sustainable and safe transportation. This research has trained two undergraduate students and one doctoral students for the interdisciplinary research on computer science, data analytics and engineering. Those students are interested in a transportation-related career in the future. This research was presented to three international conferences, TRB annual meeting, INFORMS annual meeting, and COTA international Conference of Transportation Professionals. This research was presented to students events at both CMU and Univ of Pittsburgh, which has great potential to educate the next generation of engineers, economists and scientists.
